Wellborn Home Additions & ADU: The Boca Raton Owner’s Guide

Wellborn cabinet systems in home additions and ADUs across Boca Raton typically run $45,000-$130,000 installed, depending on whether you’re extending the main structure or building a detached unit. We stock Wellborn-compatible cabinet components, hardware, and finishing systems for both the Estate Series and Premier Series lines, with most replacement parts available for next-day delivery through our distributor in West Palm Beach. If your Wellborn cabinets are sticking, sagging, or showing moisture damage after a Boca Raton summer, the fix usually involves matching the original spec exactly - Wellborn’s frameless construction tolerances are tight, and a quarter-inch off means the door won’t seat.

Most owners discover a problem when the soft-close hinge stops catching, the drawer box separates at the dovetail, or the thermofoil finish bubbles along the sink base after humidity spikes. In Boca Raton’s coastal climate, we’ve learned to check the cabinet’s back panel first - the 3/8″ engineered wood panel is where salt air infiltration shows up before anywhere else.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn organizes its residential lines into three tiers, and the parts are not interchangeable across them. The Estate Series uses 3/4″ solid hardwood frames with mortise-and-tenon door construction; the Premier Series shifts to 1/2″ engineered frames with dowel joinery; and the Classic Series (discontinued in 2019 but common in older Boca Raton homes) used a different hinge boring pattern that aftermarket hardware won’t match without a jig.

To identify your line, open the sink base and look for the foil label on the door’s back edge - it lists the series code, finish number, and date of manufacture. The hinge cup bore is 35mm on Estate and Premier, but the mounting plate screw spacing differs: 45mm center-to-center on Estate, 37mm on Premier. We source OEM Wellborn hinges and drawer boxes through our distributor, though for Classic Series we often machine custom mounting plates because Wellborn no longer stocks the original pattern. For finishes, we match to the original color code rather than eyeballing - Wellborn’s “Biscotti” and “Parchment” look identical under Boca Raton’s afternoon glare but are two different lacquer formulations with different expansion rates.

Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
  • Soft-close hinge slams or catches halfway. The hydraulic cartridge inside the Blum or Salice hinge (Wellborn used both, depending on year) has lost viscosity. In Boca Raton’s heat, this happens faster than the manufacturer rates - we typically see failure at 6-8 years instead of the advertised 15.
  • Drawer front tilts or separates from the box. The dovetail joint on Premier Series drawer boxes loosens when the 1/2″ side panel swells from humidity. Estate Series uses thicker 5/8″ stock and fails less often, but the epoxy-coated steel slide can still corrode near beachfront properties.
  • Thermofoil bubbles or delaminates along sink and dishwasher bases. This is vapor drive, not water leaks - Boca Raton’s summer humidity hits 85% regularly, and the MDF core absorbs moisture through the seam faster than the PVC skin can release it. Once bubbling starts, the substrate is compromised.
  • Wall cabinet begins to pull away from the stud. Wellborn’s frameless design transfers all load to the hanging rail. If the installer used the supplied 2-1/2″ screws instead of hitting studs, or if the rail wasn’t level to begin with, gravity wins slowly - then suddenly.
  • Finish fades unevenly near windows. UV degradation on the lacquer topcoat, accelerated by Boca Raton’s south-facing exposures. The color shift is permanent; touch-up blends the repair but won’t match the faded field exactly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Wellborn-equipped home addition or ADU in Boca Raton, full cabinet replacement within a new build starts at $45,000 and runs to $130,000 depending on square footage, plumbing relocation, and whether the unit is attached or detached. Component-level repairs are narrower: hinge replacement runs $180-$340 per cabinet including parts and labor; drawer box rebuilds are $220-$480; and thermofoil re-facing of a sink base starts at $650 because we remove the old skin, seal the MDF, and apply new PVC under shop conditions.

What drives the range: accessibility (second-story ADU vs. ground-level addition), whether electrical and plumbing rough-in needs relocation, and permit requirements - Boca Raton requires ADUs over 150 square feet to meet Florida Building Code wind-load standards, which affects cabinet anchoring details. Every quote we write lists parts, labor, and permit costs separately. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that written price is fixed; no change order is executed without your signature, which is why our projects finish within a few percent of the original number. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers both parts and installation.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground for Wellborn cabinet issues, and a hard stop. You can check the hinge model number, measure the drawer box width and depth, and photograph the foil label - that saves us both time. You can also tighten the hanging rail screws with a driver, provided you confirm they’re biting into a stud and not just drywall.

Where DIY goes wrong: frameless cabinets rely on precise reveal gaps (typically 1/16″ to 1/8″ between doors). Move a hinge 1/32″ and the pair won’t close flush. Worse, drilling new mounting holes in the engineered panel weakens it - the particleboard core crumbles under repeated stress, and Boca Raton’s humidity accelerates the degradation. For drawer boxes, the dovetail geometry matters; a hand-cut replacement won’t seat in the Blum slide channels. And thermofoil re-application requires a vacuum press and temperature control that garage equipment can’t replicate. We’re not affiliated with Wellborn - we’re an independent service provider - but we’ve installed their product since 2009 and stock the common failure parts.
